Lakewood Township Electric Supply: JCP&L Wires, Competitive Rates

Lakewood is inside JCP&L's distribution territory — the FirstEnergy subsidiary that serves most of Ocean and Monmouth counties — and outside PSE&G's footprint. That distinction matters because JCP&L runs its own Basic Generation Service auction results and posts its own Price to Compare, which is usually different from PSE&G's number by a fraction of a cent per kWh.

The township has grown faster than almost any municipality in the state over the past decade, and much of the new housing — large single-family homes across the northern and western developments — pulls significantly more electricity than the older housing stock closer to downtown and Lakewood Industrial Park. That usage skew makes fixed-rate contracts especially attractive: bigger monthly bills mean bigger absolute savings when a competitive supplier beats JCP&L's BGS by even a penny per kWh.

Natural gas is delivered by New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), a Wall-based utility that covers most of Ocean and Monmouth counties. NJNG participates in New Jersey's gas Choice program, so Lakewood households shop gas supply against NJNG's Basic Gas Supply Service rate — a separate default from anything on the electric side.

Because JCP&L and NJNG bill and read meters independently, a Lakewood household running Choice on both fuels ends up with two supplier contracts and, potentially, two suppliers. The bills stay separate — one from JCP&L, one from NJNG — with only the supply line replaced on each.
